Meet our language teacher: Sharon Zhang – ChinesePod
Sharon is originally from a small city in Hunan, China. Mandarin is her mother tongue, and she speaks English fluently as a foreign language. She also took French classes in college. Sharon is a recent graduate in Indiana University Bloomington. Her area of specialty is ESL/EFL, second and foreign language education.
In her master program, Sharon worked as a Chinese mentor in Indiana University's Chinese Flagship Program. Her specific works were helping college students develop spoken and written Chinese skills, as well as organizing Chinese Table through which students can engage themselves into authentic Chinese culture and tradition.
Sharon is excited about learning and teaching languages. She has taught English in China for a year before studying for her master's degree. She believes that learning language should be natural, interesting and engaging rather than intimidating. Teaching language is not only about teaching the language itself, but also teaching the things behind it, including culture, people and value.
1. What is your favorite sport to play?
I always like swimming because it makes me relax and helps me stay in shape. Additionally, since I came to the US, I fell in love with group exercise such as Zumba, Cardio Hip Hop and Strength Core. The upbeat music and energetic leaders allow me to release pressure and recharge myself.
2. What is the most rewarding thing about being a teacher?
Being a teacher means challenging my limits. Students come from diverse backgrounds and have their unique preferences. Therefore I need to acquire new things and explore different approaches to meet their individual needs, and finally make real differences in their lives. It is rewarding because only by challenging myself again and again, can I make progress constantly and help students "get it".
3. What is your idea of a perfect day?
After completing the work that I love, I can go traveling or rest at home with my family.
4. What is your favorite book and why?
One of my favorite book is a classic children's novel Pollyanna, which follows a girl's positive and admirable life philosophy. I enjoyed reading the book because it shared a lot of beautiful messages. It taught me to be kind and cheerful towards the unpleasant things in life, think of others, and stay innocent at heart.
