Meet our language teacher: Ruby Liu – ChinesePod

Ruby Liu

Ruby Liu

Biography

As a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese from Taiwan, Ruby is proficient in reading and writing both traditional and simplified Chinese. She has a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University. She has been taking linguistics, as well as language acquisition, pedagogy, and assessment courses to enhance her qualifications as a foreign language teacher. She has also taken Contrastive Syntax: English and Chinese, in which she analyzed the syntactical similarities and differences between the two languages, and Second Language Acquisition, where she explored how a second language is learned and the potential difficulties that learners may have in learning an additional language. Thus, she is sensitive to the challenges that learners of Chinese may encounter, such as the use of measure words and the four tones.

In addition to Chinese teaching experience, she also has extensive experience in teaching English as a foreign language in Taiwan and as a second language in the United States. Due to her previous teaching experience and her knowledge in second language acquisition, she recognizes how difficult it is to learn a second language, especially when natural language exposure is limited. Therefore, she is always patient with her students and has consistently received positive feedback on student evaluations, which makes her teaching especially rewarding. No matter what language she teaches, she always aims to promote students' motivation by using topics/materials that are relevant to students' lives, by giving appropriately challenging assignments, and by promoting learner autonomy. In sum, she is enthusiastic about language teaching and believes that learning an additional language is one of the greatest investments that one can make.

Smalltalk

How do you describe yourself?
I enjoy learning and I have a curious and analytic mind. I also have good synthesis and organization skills. However, I sometimes pay too much attention to details.
What do you love about Chinese language?
Chinese is one of most commonly spoken languages in the world. It has many idiomatic expressions, which makes the language difficult but also interesting at the same time.
Why are you a language teacher?
Teaching is a science, as well as an art, and I enjoy the challenging and multidisciplinary nature of teaching a language. I believe that the process of acquiring an additional language, as well as understanding and appreciating its associated culture, empowers one to be more competitive in this increasingly globalized world.
What is the most rewarding thing about being a teacher?
A career as a foreign language teacher has always been meaningful and enjoyable for me. I like to employ research-informed instructional techniques and materials to assist students in advancing linguistic competence in Chinese. Witnessing students' improvement is the most rewarding part of being a teacher.
What are you most passionate about?
In terms of foreign language teaching and learning, I am most passionate about how educational technology affects how a language is taught and learned.
What is your favorite sport to play?
I am not a big fan of sports, but I do like dancing. I am really into a dance game called "Just Dance Now."
What is your favorite hobby?
My favorite hobby is cooking, but I don't like to do the dishes afterward.
What is your favorite movie & why?
Although I like to watch movies, I don't have a favorite movie. But, I do prefer to watch sci-fi movies.
What is your favorite color?
I have a favorite color for different things. For example, "white" is my favorite color for electronics, "black" is my favorite color for shoes, and "bright pink" is my favorite for lipstick.
What is your favorite article of clothes?
I like jeans. I mean, who doesn't?
What is your next travel destination?
Although I have been to Las Vegas, I want to go again! It's not that I like to gamble, but I simply love Vegas for the shows and awesome buffets.

Ruby is so organized and prepared! I really appreciate her teaching style. She also brings in materials that are useful and challenge me. She makes me read out loud--which I haven't done in 20 years! And it shows... Thank you, Ruby!

Super class. Ruby provided a very helpful family tree diagram that shows the relationships and names in Mandarin of the various members on both sides of the family.
